Welcome to Brigantine, New Jersey!
Brigantine, New Jersey, is a city in Atlantic County. As of the United States 2000 Census, the city population was 12,594.
As with the entire upper Atlantic region, the Lani-Lenape Indians were the native settlers on the land. The Dutch were the first Europeans to explore the Jersey coastline searching for a waterway through the New World to the Orient. The log book of Henry Hudson's ship "Half Moon" recalls the first observation of Brigantine Beach on September 2, 1608: "This is a very good land to fall in with, and a pleasant land to see..." The legendary pirate, Captain William Kidd, is said to have buried treasure under Brigantine Beach sand. Another topic of pirate lore, Edward Teach - better known as the notorious Blackbeard - is said to have established his quarters among the deep meadows of this area after things got too dangerous in the Caribbean.
The community of Brigantine, which includes Brigantine Beach, was named for a ship wrecked off the Southern New Jersey coast around 1710. In fact, the Brigantine shoals, feared by every ship captain who sailed the Atlantic coast in the days of canvas, were from two to three miles off the beach. Well over 300 vessels of all types have been wrecked on the shoals since the early 1700s. It is recorded that during the decade from 1846-1856, sixty-four vessels were wrecked within a radius of 10 miles of Brigantine.
In the late 1800s, the large-scale development of Brigantine and Brigantine real estate was attempted several times. As an offshoot of one of these attempts, made by the Brigantine Improvement Company, the island was briefly known as "North Atlantic City." In the same period, a railroad connecting Philadelphia to Brigantine was built; 16 trolleys served the island; and steamboats ferried people to and from Atlantic City. This was the "Gay Nineties" and hotels sprang up virtually overnight, some serving as getaways for notables of the period, including U.S. President Grover Cleveland. Hard times and harsh storms ended this building and economic boom in the early 1900s. In 1917 there were only 54 full-time residents of Brigantine real estate and the city’s operating budget was a mere $5,400.
What we now know as the City of Brigantine has undergone a series of name changes and incorporations since its first creation. Originally incorporated as Brigantine Beach Borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on June 14, 1890 based on the results of a referendum held on June 3, 1890, the area was formed from portions of Galloway Township. On April 23, 1897, it was reincorporated as the City of Brigantine City. It would be known as such until April 9, 1914, when it was renamed the City of East Atlantic City. On March 16, 1924, Brigantine was again incorporated as a city, replacing East Atlantic City and incorporating more portions of Galloway Township.
The iconic Brigantine Lighthouse was built by the Island Development Real Estate Company as a sales attraction in 1926. It was the headquarters of the Brigantine Police Department during the Depression, after which it became a museum and gift shop during the second wave of development in the 1940s. With the increase of traffic around the circle, the idea was abandoned. As the lighthouse began to deteriorate, a group of volunteers refurbished the building inside and out in 1995. Today it stands as the centerpiece of the island, landscaped and alight every night, an identifying symbol for the Island of Brigantine Beach.
Today, Brigantine captures the best of the Jersey Shore with its wide coastal shoreline, brimming with beautiful inlets, bays and coves. Board a boat in search of dolphins and whales, or stay inland and visit the Sea Life Museum or Brigantine Wildlife Refuge, full of auto and hiking trails throughout 20,000 acres of wetlands. Explore the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, a private, non-profit organization that works to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals and sea turtles for eventual re-release into the wild. Nearby Atlantic City provides casino gaming and nightlife opportunities.
